The Auxier Center in Appalachia
The Auxier Center became part of Hand in Hand in 2007. Founded by Charlie and Sue Shaeffer at the behest of Fr. Ralph Beiting of the Christian Appalachian Project, The Auxier Center immediately became a resource for the community.
Situated in Floyd County, Kentucky, one of the poorest counties in America, Hand in Hand helps local residents with a food bank, clothing and household needs, educational resources and home repair. With nearly 40% unemployment, the need far exceeds the resources available in the area. Computer and life’s skills classes are available to the community. Residents who complete a basic computer course offered at the center may qualify for a free PC upon successful completion of the class. More than 6,000 computers have been given to those in need in Appalachia since the program started.
